Thanks boy43. Boy's dress in this country is horrible. I went to the mall for Christmas shopping, and concluded that the manner of their dress was a cross between skaterboy and drive-by shooting. I think it comes down to low self-esteem and self-respect. That goes for the adults, too. The go out in public in the pyjamas they wore the night before. I think this is where the term Ugly American originates.

I agree. I think the look is intended to make him look "older" than he is by being oversized. The ill-fitting suit seems to be geared more towards what a man would wear.

That's TAME compared with some private schools! Blazers in bright scarlet, pink stripped, turquoise or even (YUK!) Canary yellow! I am not kidding, I have seen them all in the last couple of years.

There are several private and parochial schools in the country that allow the wearing of shorts as part of the uniform. Most public schools allow shorts as well, although most of those shorts are the horrible kind.

This draws from the original look I was keen on as a boy. British boys back then routinely wore the sandals (Startrite) you see here, with kneesocks. Wool jumpers and short shorts were generally part of the outfit. This is a bit dated, but I always liked this look. And I have been fond of the sandals as long as I can remember.

I prefer polo- style shirts, rather than oversized t-shirts. They never go out of style. I like this look. I can guess that he is probably not wearing those horribly baggy shorts.

I think it was the fact that the shorts got SO short that killed them off, I think boys got embarrased to show so much of their legs, with a blazer or short coat on it was impossibe to even see if you WERE wearing any shorts! Also there was a strong link to age in those days, shorts were for 'young' boys, and all kids want to look older than they are, it doesn't seem to be such a problem in Aus or S. Africa where older boys usually wear shorts anyway so there is less of that 'coming of age' stuff. Personally, I wore shorts at school until I was at least 13 or 14 and actually liked them, I found long trousers uncomfortable and hot.

If they were, it seems that whoever decided the length was keen on seeing boy's legs.
