That's a good outfit, but the shorts are much too long (the half or a third of this length would be perfect). And someone needs to teach the boy to tie a tie correctly.

As they will NEVER go back to the short shorts of the 60s-80s no matter how we may lament, I will gladly accept this look.

You are right! Such a nice uniform is much better than the recent boys style (baggy shorts, long trousers and all the other casual things)!!! But shorter shorts would be better :)

I think it was the fact that the shorts got SO short that killed them off, I think boys got embarrased to show so much of their legs, with a blazer or short coat on it was impossibe to even see if you WERE wearing any shorts! Also there was a strong link to age in those days, shorts were for 'young' boys, and all kids want to look older than they are, it doesn't seem to be such a problem in Aus or S. Africa where older boys usually wear shorts anyway so there is less of that 'coming of age' stuff. Personally, I wore shorts at school until I was at least 13 or 14 and actually liked them, I found long trousers uncomfortable and hot.

I've seen many photos of boys wearing unbelievably short shorts, and they didn's seem embarrassed in the least. I'm not sure if the school madated the shortness. If they were, it seems that whoever decided the length was keen on seeing boy's legs. You must admit that the trditional look: blazer, jumper, tie, short shorts, and long socks, is an awfully nice look.
