Wilhelm von Gloeden was a German baron, who moved to Taormina, Scicily. From the early 1880s, he specialized in photographs of naked boys from the town as art. His trade wasn't underground as one may expect. Many of the pictures were published in major photographic magazines and also shown at public exhibitions, where they were awarded prizes, even in England. He paid his many models very well, enough so, that most of them went on to start their own businesses. Wilhelm died in 1931, and under Italy's fascist rule by Mussolini, most of his works (at the time owned by one of his former models,'Il Moro') were destroyed. Only about 1/4 of them still remain. Today, Wilhelm von Gloeden's works can now once again be enjoyed as art, as they were originally intended to be. This is just a small selection of his rather expansive works (originally around 7,000)
