In Thailand, Buddhists make up approximately 90% of the population, with 5% Muslim, and the rest are Christian. Most Buddhist boys serve as a novice for as long or as short a period as they choose. Dek wat (child of the temple) are traditionally no younger than eight, and do minor housework around the temple. The primary reason for becoming a dek wat is to gain a basic education, particularly in basic reading and writing and the memorization of the scriptures chanted on ritual occasions.

Many Thais believe that on every piece of property, in every building, a spirit resides. Spirits are not to be feared, but more as mischievous rascals who like to play tricks on humans. If a home is not provided for the spirit, the spirit will live in your home or building - and you do not want that, or life will be miserable. Many believe that spirits are young boys, and make sure toys and sweets are offered at the spirit house.
